Chandra Observations of Ulirgs: Extended Hot Gas Halos in Merging Galaxies
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study the properties of hot gaseous halos for 10 nearby ultraluminous IRAS galaxies observed by Chandra using the ACIS instrument. For all sample galaxies, diffuse soft X-ray emissions are found within ∼ 10 kpc of the central region; their spectra are well fit by a MEKAL model plus emission lines from α elements and other ions. The temperature of the hot gas is about 0.7 keV and metallicity is about 1Z⊙. Outside the central region, extended hot gaseous halos are found for nine out of the ten ULIRGs. The spectra for most sample ULIRGs can be fit with a MEKAL model with a temperature of about 0.6 keV and a low metallicity (Z ∼ 0.1Z⊙). We discuss the implications of our results on the origin of X-ray halos in elliptical galaxies and the feedback processes associated with starbursts. Subject headings: galaxies: evolution – galaxies: starburst – galaxies: interactions – galaxies: ISM –galaxies: ellipticals

متن کاملThe Hot Gas Halos of Galaxies in Groups
We use Chandra observations of 13 nearby groups of galaxies to investigate the hot gas content of their member galaxies. We find that a large fraction of nearIR bright, early-type galaxies in groups have extended X-ray emission, indicating that they retain significant hot gas halos even in these dense environments. In particular, we detect hot gas halos in ∼80% of LK > L∗ galaxies. We do not fi...
متن کاملHot Gaseous Halos in Early Type Galaxies
The hot gas in early type galaxies (ETGs) plays a crucial role in their formation and evolution. As the hot gas is often extended to the outskirts beyond the optical size, the large scale structural features identified by Chandra (including cavities, cold fronts, filaments, and tails) point to key evolutionary mechanisms, e.g., AGN feedback, merging history, accretion/stripping, as well as star...
متن کاملXMM - Newton observations of the merger - remnant galaxies NGC 3921 and NGC 7252
Using the high sensitivity of XMM-Newton, we have studied the X-ray emission of the two proto-typical late-stage merger remnants, NGC 3921 and NGC 7252. In the case of NGC 7252, this is complemented by archival Chandra data. We investigate the nature of the discrete X-ray point source populations and the hot diffuse gas components in these two galaxies, and compare them in the light of their di...
متن کاملRecent progress in understanding the hot and warm gas phases in the halos of star-forming galaxies
In this contribution we present a few selected examples of how the latest generation of space-based instrumentation – NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) – are finally answering old questions about the influence of massive star feedback on the warm and hot phases of the ISM and IGM. In particular, we discuss the physical origin of the soft ther...
